Description
“One Scene, Three Takes” invites participants to reimagine urban sketching through the lens of small, impactful vignettes. By breaking a complex scene into three focused studies, this workshop offers a structured yet playful approach to understanding composition, experimenting with a unique ‘color first, line second’ process, and capturing light and shadow.
Participants will work on three 6×6 inches coaster-like watercolor sketches of the same scene. Each vignette will explore a distinct theme:
Composition – Understand Negative Space: Learn to frame a scene, simplify elements, and use white space to enhance balance and focus.
Process – Color First, Line Second: Build bold, expressive compositions using color blocks as the foundation first. Then add line work strategically.
Contrast – Light & Shadow: Master tonal contrast to bring depth and drama to your sketches.
This step-by-step progression encourages participants to approach urban sketching with fresh eyes, emphasizing observation and creativity. The workshop culminates in a collaborative “throwdown,” where all participants’ vignettes combine to form a vibrant urban mosaic—a celebration of individual perspectives and collective storytelling.
Whether the students are refining their skills or exploring new techniques, this workshop offers an inspiring and hands-on experience in capturing the dynamic spirit of Chicago urban scene.
