How to Sketch Like an Architect

Joel Berman RA, NCARB, ALA, is the founder and president of Joel Berman Architecture & Design, an international Chicago architecture firm specializing in inner city adaptive reuse and heritage restoration for restaurant, hospitality, institutional and residential development.

Joel’s professional projects include an award-winning historic preservation renovation of a 1920s White Castle building, conversion of a 1906 Chicago fire station into a major video production and post edit facility, and design of branded restaurant and retail prototypes with locations around the US. Joel’s practice has national and international clients, including Manyavar-Mohey (Bangalore), Gelatissimo (Sydney), and Zalman’s (Jerusalem).

For Joel, clear and fast sketching has been a factor in the success of his design work and architectural practice. Joel has taught architectural sketching at the Chicago Architecture Center, Urban Sketchers Chicago, the Ontario Association of Architects, Columbia College Chicago, the Alberta Association of Architects, and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
