How to Sketch Like an Architect

DESCRIPTION

In this course, architect and instructor Joel Berman will guide students through a series of exercises designed to develop the ability to communicate easily, clearly and quickly through freehand sketching.  Students will learn several different freehand sketching techniques, each at a different location:  thumbnail sketches, contour lines, contrast and value, perspective and speed sketching.  At the end of the workshop, participants will pull together what they have learned in a final sketch, focusing on historic Chicago buildings and parks.

LEARNING GOALS

In this workshop, participants will:

  • learn or improve upon the following freehand sketching skills and techniques: composition, value and contrast
  • improve their ability to document and remember the existing built environment
  • learn how to draw faster and with more confidence

  • Pencils: 3b / hb / 2h
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Black Sharpie
  • 8 ½” x 11” drawing paper pad

WALKING DISTANCE

This workshop takes place at 3 different locations, the furthest of which is approximately 14 minutes’ walking distance from Palette & Chisel.
