Capturing the Ephemeral

INSTRUCTOR

Donald Colley

DESCRIPTION

This unique workshop will be held in a classroom at the Palette & Chisel. Instructor  Donald Colley will dedicate more time to explaining and demonstrating techniques, strategies, and materials for capturing dynamic scenes and developing rich drawings. The classroom environment will also allow the instructor to present several completed sketchbooks as well as slides demonstrating the progressive stages of a drawing’s development. While this workshop will largely involve lectures and drawing demonstrations by the instructor, students should bring materials and be prepared to practice techniques as shown in the class.

LEARNING GOALS

In this workshop, participants will:

  • develop a better understanding of the concept of EFFICIENCY while drawing in dynamic, bustling situations
  • learn what to focus on and what to omit in order to quickly get the essential story
  • develop SKILL SETS that help the artist make the most of their time and tools

SUPPLY LIST

  • Brush pen markers: one medium gray (cool or warm) and one black. The instructor prefers Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens because they are water-based and waterproof once dry – great for layering
  • Waterproof ink pens such as chisel, fude or bullet  in black and one gray, medium and bold nib size recommended
  • A watercolor or bristol sketchbook of your choosing such as  Stillman & Birn, Moleskine, Fabriano, or Strathmore, size 5”x8” or 8”x11”. If you’re familiar with toned drawing paper and like it, bring something that makes an opaque white mark.

WALKING DISTANCE

This workshop is being held at Palette & Chisel.  Little walking is required, but there are stairs to navigate.
